Battle of Chioggia
Chioggia, Venetian Lagoon, Italy
What happened
In 1379 Genoa and its Hungarian and Paduan allies captured Chioggia in the Venetian lagoon, nearly surrounding Venice. The Venetians sank stone-filled boats to block the channels and trap the Genoese fleet. Relief came too late, and the Genoese surrendered Chioggia in June 1380.
Why it matters
Both republics were badly weakened, but Genoa lost its naval supremacy and was not seen in the Adriatic again. Venice recovered and stayed a major power.
What came next
The Peace of Turin in 1381 ended the war without a clear winner.
Did you know?
Chioggia's yearly Palio della Marciliana festival still recalls the war.
