Uqair Protocol

Uqair, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia

What happened

Sir Percy Cox, the British High Commissioner for Iraq, made the agreement with Ibn Saud of Nejd, with Britain's agent for Kuwait present. After raids from Nejd into Kuwait, Britain arranged a meeting at the old port of Uqair. The agreement drew borders between Iraq, Nejd and Kuwait. It also created two neutral zones shared between neighbours.

Why it matters

Why it matters: It helped set the borders of modern Saudi Arabia. Kuwait lost more than two-thirds of the land it claimed, and was given no say.

What came next

The loss increased anti-British feeling in Kuwait.

Did you know?

Some have suggested Uqair was the site of the ancient trading city of Gerrha, but archaeologists found its ruins are from a later period.
