Treaty of Żurawno
Żurawno (Zhuravno), Lviv Oblast, Ukraine
What happened
In 1672 the Commonwealth had signed a harsh treaty at Buchach. After King Jan Sobieski's army faced the Ottomans at Żurawno, a new treaty was agreed. The Commonwealth no longer had to pay tribute and regained about a third of the Ukrainian lands it had lost.
Why it matters
It ended the second phase of the Polish–Ottoman War. It was better for the Commonwealth than the Buchach treaty.
What came next
The Polish parliament refused to ratify it, and the Great Turkish War soon followed. After the Treaty of Karlowitz, Podolia returned to Poland.
Did you know?
The treaty has three names, in Turkish, Polish and Lithuanian, because the town had several names.
