Treaty of Vienna (1864)
Vienna, Austria
What happened
After losing the Second Schleswig War, Denmark gave up the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg. Austria and Prussia agreed to govern Schleswig and Holstein together. Denmark kept the island of Ærø and a few small areas.
Why it matters
It ended the Second Schleswig War. Arguments between Austria and Prussia over running the two duchies soon led to the Austro-Prussian War of 1866.
What came next
Prussia won that war and took over Schleswig and Holstein.
Did you know?
Ærø was the only island in the Schleswig area that Denmark was allowed to keep.
