Treaty of Värälä
Värälä, Elimäki, Finland
What happened
King Gustav III of Sweden had started a war with Russia in 1788. After a big Swedish naval win at Svensksund in July 1790, the two sides made peace. Borders went back to where they were before the war.
Why it matters
Russia gave up its claimed right to interfere in Sweden's internal affairs. Russia also, in effect, accepted Gustav III's government.
What came next
In 1791 the two countries signed a pact at Drottningholm to help each other if attacked.
Did you know?
Swedish troops won the second Battle of Svensksund just five weeks before the peace.
