Treaty of Titalia
Titalia (Tetulia), Panchagarh, Bangladesh
What happened
After the Anglo-Nepalese War, the East India Company had taken land from Nepal. At Titalia, the Company gave Sikkim back the land between the Mechi and Teesta rivers that Nepal had taken from it. In return Sikkim agreed to let the British settle its disputes with neighbours, to support the British, and to let British goods pass duty-free.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It placed Sikkim under British protection and gave the British trade routes up to the Tibetan border. Sikkim also became a channel for British dealings with China.
What came next
An 1894 gazetteer said that through this treaty British India had become the 'paramount' power over Sikkim.
Did you know?
The town where it was signed is now in Bangladesh, not in Sikkim or India.
