Treaty of the Bogue
Humen (the Bogue), Guangdong, China
What happened
It added detailed rules to the 1842 Treaty of Nanking, which had ended the First Opium War. British people could live, trade and buy property in five treaty ports, including Shanghai and Canton, and would be judged under British, not Chinese, law.
Why it matters
It is considered one of the first 'unequal treaties'. China sees it as a step toward Western domination.
What came next
In 1845 new land rules in Shanghai led to the founding of the Shanghai International Settlement.
