Treaty of Teschen
Teschen (Cieszyn), Poland
What happened
When the ruler of Bavaria died without children in 1777, Emperor Joseph II tried to take Bavarian land, and Prussia's Frederick II opposed him. The war that followed stalled. Joseph's mother, Maria Theresa, pushed for peace, and Austria received only a small area called the Innviertel.
Why it matters
It ended the War of the Bavarian Succession after a war that soon stalled. The Innviertel has stayed part of Upper Austria ever since, apart from a short break in the Napoleonic Wars.
What came next
Joseph II tried again in 1785 to swap the Austrian Netherlands for Bavaria, but the plan failed.
Did you know?
Maria Theresa was co-ruler with her son, and she firmly opposed his war.
