Treaty of Szatmár
Szatmár (Satu Mare), Romania
What happened
Hungarians led by Francis Rákóczi had fought against Habsburg rule since 1703. Rákóczi rejected the peace terms, but Károlyi called an assembly of the rebels, which accepted them. The treaty gave a general amnesty, protected religious freedom, and promised to respect Hungary's laws and parliament.
Why it matters
It ended Rákóczi's War of Independence. The new emperor, Charles VI, wanted peace so that he could take the Hungarian crown.
What came next
On 1 May 1711, 12,000 of Rákóczi's former supporters swore loyalty to the Habsburgs outside Szatmár.
