Treaty of Sistova
Sistova (Svishtov), Bulgaria
What happened
Austria had taken Belgrade during the war of 1787–1791, but it faced a threat from Prussia and was worried about the French Revolution. It settled for small gains, mainly the town of Orsova and a few places on the Croatian border.
Why it matters
It ended the last war between the Habsburgs and the Ottomans. Austria stayed out of Russia's later wars against the Ottomans.
What came next
Weeks later Austria and Prussia issued the Declaration of Pillnitz about France, and both went on to fight the French Revolution.
Did you know?
The treaty was written in French and Turkish.
