Treaty of Sèvres
Sèvres, near Paris, France
What happened
The treaty was signed in an exhibition room of the national porcelain factory at Sèvres. It took away most Ottoman lands where Turkish people were not the majority and created Allied zones of control. It also limited the Ottoman army and put the Straits in a neutral zone.
Why it matters
The harsh terms angered Turkish nationalists led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha and fueled the Turkish War of Independence, which was already underway. The treaty was never ratified.
What came next
After Turkish victories, the Treaty of Lausanne replaced Sèvres in 1923 and restored territory in Anatolia and Thrace to Turkey.
Did you know?
The room where it was signed is now the porcelain museum in Sèvres.
