Treaty of Seville

Seville, Andalusia, Spain

What happened

Britain and Spain had fought a short war, including a Spanish siege of Gibraltar in 1727, over Gibraltar and trade. The treaty put things back as they were. British and French merchants got their trading rights in Cádiz back, and Britain and France supported Spain's Prince Charles's claim to Parma and Tuscany.

Why it matters

It ended the Anglo-Spanish War of 1727–1729. But it did not settle the quarrel over Gibraltar, which helped lead to new wars in 1739 and 1740.

What came next

Prince Charles inherited Parma in 1732 and later became king of Spain in 1759.

Did you know?

Spain had been left out of the Congress of Soissons, held earlier to try to avoid a European war.
