Treaty of Seringapatam

Srirangapatna, Karnataka, India

What happened

Tipu Sultan of Mysore and Lord Cornwallis for the East India Company, with the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Marathas, made peace. The Third Anglo-Mysore War began when Tipu attacked Travancore, a British ally. With British armies outside his island capital, Tipu agreed to give up about half his kingdom to the Company, the Marathas and Hyderabad. He also had to send two of his sons as hostages until a large payment was made.

Why it matters

Why it matters: It ended the Third Anglo-Mysore War and greatly weakened Mysore. Cornwallis chose a treaty rather than a costly assault on the capital.

What came next

War broke out again in 1799, and Tipu fell defending Srirangapatna.
