Treaty of Salbai

Salbai, near Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

What happened

The Maratha general Mahadaji Shinde and David Anderson for the British East India Company concluded the treaty, later ratified by Warren Hastings. The First Anglo-Maratha War had gone badly for the British, including their surrender at Wadgaon. At the village of Salbai, the Company agreed to stop backing its candidate for Peshwa, Raghunathrao, and to hand back most places it had taken. Mahadaji Shinde became the guarantor of the treaty.

Why it matters

Why it matters: It brought about twenty years of peace between the Marathas and the British. But it also weakened Maratha unity and left Mysore on its own.

What came next

The Peshwa's government ratified it in December 1782. Peace lasted until the Second Anglo-Maratha War in 1802.

Did you know?

Mahadaji Shinde acted as a go-between for both sides and as the treaty's guarantor.
