Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye (1679)
Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Yvelines, France
What happened
Brandenburg had conquered Swedish Pomerania during the Scanian War. After France made peace with the Dutch, it invaded Brandenburg's lands, and the Elector, short of allies, had to accept. Brandenburg gave most of Pomerania back to Sweden in return for money from France.
Why it matters
It ended Brandenburg's part in the war. Some historians call it the Elector's worst political defeat.
What came next
Stettin was handed back to Sweden in December 1679, and Brandenburg made a secret alliance with France.
Did you know?
France told the Elector that Sweden would give up Stettin 'no more than Stockholm'.
