Treaty of Ribemont

Ribemont, Aisne, France

What happened

The Carolingian family ruled the Frankish lands in several branches that often quarrelled. At Ribemont in February 880, the young West Frankish kings recognised that all of Lotharingia belonged to Louis the Younger. In return he supported them.

Why it matters

Why it matters: It ended the rivalry between the two branches so they could face a revolt by Boso and new Viking attacks together. The border it set between West and East Francia stayed largely the same until the late Middle Ages.

What came next

The kings helped each other against Boso, who lost some land but kept his kingdom.

Did you know?

The Ribemont town page calls it 'the last treaty on the partitions of the Frankish Empire'.
