Treaty of Rastatt

Rastatt, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

What happened

Marshal Claude de Villars for France and Prince Eugene of Savoy for Austria negotiated the treaty. The War of the Spanish Succession was fought over who should inherit Spain. Britain and others had made peace at Utrecht in 1713, but France and Austria fought on. At Rastatt the two old opponents agreed peace, and Austria gained Naples, Milan, Sardinia and the Spanish Netherlands.

Why it matters

Why it matters: It ended the war between France and Austria.
