Peace of Prague
Prague, Czech Republic
What happened
The Kingdom of Prussia and the Austrian Empire signed the treaty. In the Seven Weeks' War, Prussia had beaten Austria at Königgrätz. At Prague the two made peace. The German Confederation was dissolved and Austria was shut out of German affairs for good.
Why it matters
Why it matters: Prussia became the leading power among the German states. Otto von Bismarck kept the terms mild so that Austria would not be a lasting enemy.
What came next
The North German Confederation formed under Prussia, and the German Empire followed in 1871. Austria turned to Hungary and became Austria-Hungary in 1867.
