Treaty of Perpetual Peace (1686)
Moscow, Russia
What happened
It confirmed the 1667 Truce of Andrusovo between Russia and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Russia kept left-bank Ukraine and the city of Kyiv, and paid Poland 146,000 roubles. Both sides agreed to work together against the Ottoman Empire.
Why it matters
It was a major success for Russian diplomacy and brought Russia into an anti-Ottoman alliance. The borders it set lasted until the First Partition of Poland in 1772.
What came next
A Russo-Turkish war followed from 1686 to 1700.
Did you know?
Poland–Lithuania's parliament did not ratify the treaty until 1710, 24 years after it was signed.
