Treaty of Ouchy
Ouchy, Lausanne, Switzerland
What happened
Italy and the Ottoman Empire made peace in Ouchy, by Lake Geneva. In 1911 Italy invaded the Ottoman provinces of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, in today's Libya. A year later the two sides signed peace in Ouchy, part of Lausanne. The Ottomans withdrew from Libya, and Italy promised to leave the Dodecanese islands it had seized.
Why it matters
Why it matters: Italy became a colonial power in North Africa. Ottoman weakness in the war encouraged the Balkan states to attack them weeks later.
What came next
Local resistance in Libya went on for years. Italy did not leave the Dodecanese, which went to Greece in 1947.
