Treaty of Lübeck
Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
What happened
Denmark had joined the Thirty Years' War in 1625, but imperial armies under Wallenstein and Tilly turned the war against it. Both sides were ready to talk. Christian got all his lands back but promised to stay out of the Empire's affairs.
Why it matters
It ended Denmark's part in the Thirty Years' War. Denmark–Norway lost its place as a major European power, and Sweden became the leading Nordic power.
What came next
Sweden landed in Pomerania in 1630 and joined the war.
Did you know?
The treaty has two dates, 12 and 22 May, because Protestant and Catholic states used different calendars.
