Treaty of London (1915)
London, United Kingdom
What happened
Italy had stayed out of the First World War at first. In this secret treaty, Britain, France and Russia promised Italy land including Trentino, South Tyrol, much of Dalmatia and the Dodecanese Islands, plus a large loan, if it joined the war on their side. Italy agreed to enter the war.
Why it matters
It brought Italy into the First World War against Austria-Hungary. But its promises caused lasting arguments among the Allies and in Italy itself.
What came next
After the war Italy received less than it had been promised, which fed the idea of a 'mutilated victory'; the Treaty of Rapallo later settled Italy's eastern border.
Did you know?
The treaty was meant to stay secret, but after the October Revolution the Bolsheviks published its full text.
