Treaty of Lisbon (1668)

Lisbon, Portugal

What happened

Spain, under the regent Queen Mariana, and Portugal, represented by Prince Pedro, made peace with the help of the English envoy the Earl of Sandwich. Since 1640 Portugal had been fighting to stay free of Spanish rule under its new royal family, the House of Braganza. After Portugal's victory at Montes Claros, the two sides agreed peace terms in Lisbon. Spain recognised the Braganza kings, and Portugal kept its overseas colonies except Ceuta, which went to Spain.

Why it matters

Why it matters: The treaty ended 28 years of war and the Iberian Union with Spain that had begun in 1580. It confirmed that Spain would not rule Portugal again.

What came next

Portugal turned more toward France and England. The peace also brought prisoner exchanges and restored trade between the two countries.

Did you know?

The treaty said letters between Madrid and Lisbon should avoid the title 'King of Spain'.
