Treaty of Labiau

Labiau (Polessk), Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia

What happened

During the Second Northern War, Sweden needed Brandenburg's support. Sweden made Frederick William full ruler of the Duchy of Prussia, instead of a vassal, and in return he paid money and promised religious freedom to Lutherans there.

Why it matters

It ended Prussia's status as a fief held under another king. This later allowed the rulers of Prussia to call themselves kings.

What came next

Frederick William later switched sides and made a treaty with Poland at Wehlau in 1657.

Did you know?

In 1701 Frederick I crowned himself king of Prussia, building on the sovereignty won at Labiau.
