Treaty of Jönköping
Jönköping, Sweden
What happened
Sweden had tried to invade Norway in 1808, but the attack stalled and Swedish troops left Norway that summer. Worn out after losing Finland to Russia, Sweden made peace with Denmark–Norway. Neither side gave up any land.
Why it matters
It ended the Dano-Swedish War of 1808–1809. Jönköping was chosen because it was about the same distance from Stockholm and Copenhagen.
What came next
Norway was handed to the Swedish king five years later, by the Treaty of Kiel in 1814.
Did you know?
The talks ended with a grand ball, called one of the most splendid parties ever held in Jönköping.
