Treaty of Huế (1884)

Huế, Vietnam

What happened

Jules Patenôtre for France and representatives of the Nguyễn court of Vietnam signed the treaty. France had been taking control of Vietnam step by step. At the imperial capital, Huế, the court accepted French protection over Annam (central Vietnam) and Tonkin (the north). France would also handle Vietnam's dealings with other countries.

Why it matters

Why it matters: It was the basis of French colonial rule for about seventy years. A seal once given by China's emperor was melted down at the ceremony, to show that France had replaced China's influence.

What came next

The protectorate lasted until 1945. France recognised Vietnam's independence within the French Union in 1949.

Did you know?

Huế was Vietnam's capital under the Nguyễn dynasty from 1802 to 1945, and its imperial monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
