Treaty of Hartford (1650)
Hartford, Connecticut, USA
What happened
English settlers were pressing on the Dutch colony of New Netherland. Stuyvesant gave up Dutch claims along the Connecticut River, and the two sides drew a line between Dutch and English lands on the mainland and on Long Island.
Why it matters
It recognised that English settlers already lived in the Connecticut Valley and eastern Long Island. Today's Connecticut–New York border and the line between Nassau and Suffolk counties still roughly follow it.
What came next
The Dutch West India Company approved the treaty, but the English government did not. England conquered New Netherland in 1664.
Did you know?
Hartford grew up around the Dutch trading post called Fort Hoop, or the 'House of Hope'.
