Treaty of Hanover (1725)
Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany
What happened
Earlier that year, Austria and Spain had become allies in the Treaty of Vienna. In answer, Britain, France and Prussia promised to send troops to help one another if attacked.
Why it matters
It created the 'Hanoverian Alliance', a counterweight to the Austro-Spanish bloc. It was signed in Hanover, whose rulers were also kings of Great Britain.
What came next
The Dutch Republic and Sweden joined in 1726–1727. Spain besieged Gibraltar in 1727, starting a short Anglo-Spanish war.
