Treaty of Hamedan
Hamadan, Iran
What happened
Ashraf had claimed to rule all of Persia, which the Ottomans saw as an insult, and they went to war. Later, troubles at home pushed Ashraf to seek peace. The Ottomans recognised him as Shah of Iran and kept the Persian lands they occupied, including Zanjan and Soltaniyeh.
Why it matters
The Ottomans kept their gains, and Ashraf won recognition. But many Iranians saw the Afghan rulers as usurpers.
What came next
Revolts weakened Ashraf's rule, and Nader rose to power. The Afghans left Isfahan in November 1729.
Did you know?
Ashraf had even claimed to be the Sunni caliph.
