Treaty of Giyanti
Giyanti, near Karanganyar, Central Java, Indonesia
What happened
The Mataram kingdom on Java was torn by a war over who should rule. The treaty split it in two: Pakubuwono III kept the eastern half, ruled from Surakarta, and Mangkubumi took the western half, ruled from Yogyakarta, as its sultan.
Why it matters
It ended the Third Javanese War of Succession and created the separate royal courts of Surakarta and Yogyakarta.
What came next
Mangkubumi became Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. Another prince, Raden Mas Said, kept fighting until a separate treaty in 1757.
Did you know?
When the Dutch doubted that one land could have two rulers, Mangkubumi pointed out that Cirebon had more than one sultan.
