Treaty of Ganja
Ganja, Azerbaijan
What happened
The treaty was agreed near Ganja while Persian forces were besieging the city. Russia agreed to give back the remaining Persian lands it held in the Caucasus, including Derbent and Baku, and the two states agreed to stand together against the Ottoman Empire.
Why it matters
Russia gained an advantage in its rivalry with the Ottomans. Persia's leader Nader Shah gained a quieter western border.
What came next
It confirmed the earlier Treaty of Resht of 1732, under which Russia had already given up claims to lands along the Caspian Sea.
Did you know?
Peter the Great had conquered Derbent and Baku in 1722–1723, and this treaty handed them back.
