Treaty of Füssen

Füssen, Bavaria, Germany

What happened

The Electorate of Bavaria and Habsburg Austria; Joseph Fürst zu Fürstenberg signed for Bavaria and Rudolf Graf von Colloredo for Austria. During the War of the Austrian Succession, Bavaria had fought on France's side against Austria. At Füssen, Elector Maximilian III Joseph made peace, gave up his father's claim to Bohemia and accepted the Pragmatic Sanction. Austria asked for no reparations.

Why it matters

It took Bavaria out of the war. It ended Bavaria's fight for Charles VII's claims to the imperial title and to Bohemia.

What came next

Maximilian promised to back Francis Stephen of Lorraine as Holy Roman Emperor. In the Treaty of Dresden later that year, Prussia also recognised Francis I as emperor.
