Treaty of Fredrikshamn
Fredrikshamn (Hamina), Finland
What happened
It ended the Finnish War. Sweden handed over Finland, the Åland islands and parts of Lapland to Russia.
Why it matters
The lands became the Grand Duchy of Finland, a self-governing part of the Russian Empire. This led to a revival of Finnish culture and, in 1917, to Finland's independence.
What came next
In 1812 Russia and Sweden became allies against France.
Did you know?
Napoleon called Åland 'the fore-posts of Stockholm'.
