Treaty of Fort Stanwix (1768)
Fort Stanwix, Rome, New York, USA
What happened
Britain wanted to move the boundary set in 1763 and reduce violence on the frontier. The treaty drew a new 'Line of Property' along the Ohio River, and the Haudenosaunee gave up claims to lands south of it, including the Kentucky region. The nations present received gifts and money.
Why it matters
Haudenosaunee claims to Kentucky and most of present-day West Virginia passed to the Crown. But the Shawnee and Lenape, who used much of that land, did not sign, so it did not bring lasting peace.
What came next
Conflict grew along the Ohio River and led to Dunmore's War. A separate treaty with the Cherokee followed in 1770.
Did you know?
The payment was described as the highest the British Crown had ever made to Native Americans.
