Treaty of Copenhagen (1660)

Copenhagen, Denmark

What happened

Sweden had won large lands from Denmark at Roskilde in 1658, then attacked again, but Copenhagen held out. In the new peace, signed in tents outside the city, Sweden kept Scania, Halland, Blekinge and Bohuslän, but gave Trøndelag back to Norway and Bornholm back to Denmark.

Why it matters

It ended the Second Northern War between the two kingdoms. The borders it confirmed are almost the same as those of Denmark, Sweden and Norway today.

What came next

Four days later, the last Swedish troops on Zealand began to leave.

Did you know?

The people of Bornholm had risen against Swedish rule, and Denmark's king insisted on getting the island back.
