Treaty of Breslau

Breslau (Wrocław), Poland

What happened

Frederick had taken Silesia from Austria in 1740 and won the Battle of Chotusitz in May 1742. In this preliminary peace, Maria Theresa gave most of Silesia and the County of Glatz to Prussia, while Austria kept a smaller southern part.

Why it matters

Together with the Treaty of Berlin, it ended the First Silesian War. Prussia gained about a million new subjects, and much of the 1742 border still forms today's border between the Czech Republic and Poland.

What came next

Maria Theresa wanted Silesia back, and the Second Silesian War broke out only two years later.

Did you know?

Frederick reportedly mocked the British go-between, Lord Hyndford, with a rude nickname.
