Treaty of Belgrade
Belgrade, Serbia
What happened
In the Austro-Turkish War of 1737–1739, the Habsburg army lost the Battle of Grocka and was besieged in Belgrade. Vienna decided to negotiate. The Habsburgs gave back northern Serbia with Belgrade and other lands, and the new border was set along the Sava and Danube rivers.
Why it matters
It ended the Habsburg-held Kingdom of Serbia, which had existed since 1718, and led many Serbs to move away from the handed-over lands. Those lands stayed under Ottoman rule until the war of 1788–1791.
What came next
Russia, the Habsburgs' ally, made its own peace with the Ottomans at Niš on 3 October 1739.
Did you know?
It was one of the last international treaties written in Latin.
