Treaty of Baden
Baden, Aargau, Switzerland
What happened
It ended the War of the Spanish Succession between France and the Holy Roman Empire. France kept Alsace and Landau but returned the Breisgau, on the east bank of the Rhine, to Austria. The rulers of Bavaria and Cologne got their lands back.
Why it matters
With the Treaties of Utrecht and Rastatt, it closed one of Europe's biggest wars. It was the first international agreement signed in the Swiss Confederacy.
What came next
Philip V kept real power in Spain, though Emperor Charles VI still used the title King of Spain. The signers also secretly agreed to support Switzerland's Catholic cantons.
