Treaty of Badajoz (1801)
Badajoz, Extremadura, Spain
What happened
Spain, led by Manuel de Godoy, and Portugal, under Prince Regent John, made peace. In the short War of the Oranges, Spain invaded Portugal with French support. At Badajoz the two agreed peace. Portugal gave the border town of Olivenza to Spain and closed its ports to British ships.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It ended the War of the Oranges. Portugal still disputes Spain's control of Olivenza today.
What came next
Spain and France invaded Portugal in 1807, which Portugal says cancelled the treaty. Spain still governs Olivenza.
