Treaty of Ankara (1921)
Ankara, Turkey
What happened
France had been fighting Turkish nationalist forces in southern Anatolia. In this treaty France agreed to end the war and hand large areas back to Turkey. Turkey accepted French control of Syria, and the border between Syria and Turkey was moved in Turkey's favour.
Why it matters
It ended the Franco-Turkish War and redrew the Syria–Turkey border. France made the treaty with the Grand National Assembly of Turkey rather than the Sultan's government.
What came next
The Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 recognised the new border, and Ankara became Turkey's capital on 13 October 1923.
Did you know?
Under the treaty, the tomb of Suleyman Shah, grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman dynasty, stayed Turkish property even though it lay in Syria.
