Treaty of Andelot
Andelot-Blancheville, Haute-Marne, France
What happened
In Frankish Gaul, the Merovingian kings ruled separate kingdoms and often quarrelled. At Andelot, Guntram agreed to adopt Brunhilda's son Childebert II as his heir and to join him against rebellious nobles. Guntram also handed the city of Tours to Childebert.
Why it matters
Why it matters: The treaty was written down, and the historian Gregory of Tours copied its full text into his History of the Franks. Gregory saw the handover of Tours as especially important.
What came next
Arguments continued. Gregory was later sent to Guntram, who complained that promises, especially over Senlis, were being broken.
