Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1668)
Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle), Germany
What happened
Louis XIV had invaded the Spanish Netherlands in 1667, claiming the lands by right of his marriage. England, the Dutch Republic and Sweden formed a Triple Alliance to press for peace. France gave back Franche-Comté and some towns but kept Lille and other border towns.
Why it matters
It ended the War of Devolution. Several of the towns France kept, such as Lille, are still French today.
What came next
Louis later used vague wording in the treaty to claim more villages after the Peace of Nijmegen in 1679.
Did you know?
Spain did not formally accept the treaty until May 1669.
