Sixth Battle of the Isonzo

Gorizia, Italy

What happened

Cadorna quickly moved troops by train back to the Isonzo front. After a heavy bombardment on a narrow front, Italian infantry took Mount Sabotin and Monte San Michele. The Austro-Hungarian line around Gorizia gave way, and Italian troops entered the city on 8 August.

Why it matters

It was the most successful Italian attack on the Isonzo and lifted Italian morale. Soon after, Italy declared war on Germany.

What came next

The Seventh Battle of the Isonzo followed in September 1916. Gorizia was lost again after Caporetto in late 1917.

Did you know?

Gorizia had been out of Italy's reach in the five earlier battles on the Isonzo.
