Siege of Oshi
Oshi Castle, Gyōda, Saitama, Japan
What happened
During Hideyoshi's campaign against the Hōjō, most of Oshi's soldiers were away at Odawara. The small garrison, helped by about 2,000 local people, refused to surrender. Ishida tried to flood the castle by building about 28 km of dikes, but it held out for more than a month.
Why it matters
Why it matters: The siege gave Oshi the nickname 'floating castle'. It hurt Ishida's reputation as a commander, which later weakened his support before Sekigahara.
What came next
The defenders surrendered only after learning that their lord had given up at Odawara.
