Siege of Inabayama Castle
Mount Kinka, Gifu, Japan
What happened
Nobunaga's army crossed the Kiso River into Mino Province and surrounded Mount Inaba. Kinoshita's men found a path up the steep back of the mountain and climbed it at night. At dawn they entered the castle, started fires and opened the gates, and Nobunaga's troops overran the garrison.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It ended the long rivalry between the Oda and Saitō clans and gave Nobunaga the rich province of Mino. It also raised Kinoshita's standing.
What came next
Nobunaga renamed the castle Gifu Castle and made it his headquarters until 1575. Kinoshita later took the name Hashiba, and then Toyotomi.
Did you know?
A legend says Kinoshita built Sunomata Castle in one night; more likely only its frame and front were put up quickly.
