Siege of Béxar

San Antonio (Béxar), Texas, USA

What happened

Texian volunteers under Stephen F. Austin and later Edward Burleson besieged a Mexican garrison under Martín Perfecto de Cos. After the Texas Revolution began, Texian volunteers surrounded the Mexican garrison at San Antonio de Béxar. The siege dragged on through autumn. In December Texians fought their way into the town, and Cos pulled back into the Alamo and surrendered.

Why it matters

It was the longest Texian campaign of the revolution. No organised Mexican garrison was left in Texas.

What came next

Santa Anna marched north with a larger army to retake Béxar, leading to the fighting at the Alamo in 1836.

Did you know?

Texians once captured Mexican pack mules hoping for silver, but the bags were full of cut grass.
