Second Battle of İnönü

İnönü, Eskişehir Province, Turkey

What happened

Greek troops attacked toward Eskişehir and Afyonkarahisar and took a hill called Metristepe. On 31 March Turkish forces counterattacked and won the hill back. The Greek army pulled back in good order.

Why it matters

It was the first real test of the new Turkish regular army, which showed it could fight as a disciplined force. It also strengthened Mustafa Kemal's position at home.

What came next

The Greeks prepared larger offensives, which led to the battles of Kütahya–Eskişehir and the Sakarya.

Did you know?
