Second Battle of Bassano
Bassano del Grappa and Fontaniva, Italy
What happened
Napoleon's French army, with Masséna and Augereau, fought an Austrian army under József Alvinczi. Austria sent Alvinczi's army on a third attempt to relieve the siege of Mantua. Masséna attacked Austrian positions at Fontaniva from 7 a.m. until evening, and Augereau fought near Bassano until about 10 p.m. Bonaparte reported a victory but ordered a retreat that evening.
Why it matters
It was the first tactical defeat of Bonaparte's career. It came two months after his victory at the first Battle of Bassano.
What came next
The French fell back toward Verona, and an attack at Caldiero failed. Bonaparte then won the decisive Battle of Arcole on 15–17 November 1796.
Did you know?
The Austrian general Lipthay stayed at his post even after his wounded horse fell on him.
