Peace of Nikolsburg
Mikulov (Nikolsburg), Czech Republic
What happened
Bethlen had invaded Habsburg Hungary in 1618 but had lost ground. In the peace, signed at Nikolsburg in Moravia, he gave up his claim to be King of Hungary. In return he got the title of Imperial Prince, seven counties on the Upper Tisza, several fortresses and a duchy in Silesia, and the emperor promised to respect Protestant worship in Transylvania.
Why it matters
It ended the war between Bethlen and Ferdinand. With his eastern border safe, Ferdinand could turn to fighting in the Rhineland during the Thirty Years' War.
What came next
The peace was confirmed by a Treaty of Vienna in 1624 and a peace at Pressburg in 1626.
Did you know?
The treaty was made at Mikulov Castle, which is now a regional museum.
