Peace of Étaples
Étaples, Pas-de-Calais, France
What happened
King Henry VII of England and King Charles VIII of France made the treaty. France had been supporting Perkin Warbeck, who claimed Henry's throne, so in October 1492 an English army landed at Calais and besieged Boulogne. At Étaples, Charles agreed to stop supporting Warbeck and to pay Henry a large sum. Henry accepted French rights over the Duchy of Brittany.
Why it matters
It ended the English invasion of France. Henry presented it as proof of English strength, and Warbeck lost his French support.
What came next
The treaty was ratified in December 1492. Louis XII renewed it in 1498, and Henry VIII's councillors renewed it in 1510.
